Where the text comes from

Rival Watch is the name of the software that fetched pages and compiled these records. Each row names its source. A Rival Watch fetch is a request that software made to the company's own public page. An Internet Archive capture is a page the Wayback Machine saved earlier; a Common Crawl capture is a page saved by the Common Crawl project, shown through its index record. The archives made their captures, not us; we read them from the archive.

How the live fetches were made

Every Rival Watch fetch shown on this site used a standard web-browser User-Agent string. The software did not check whether a site's robots.txt allowed these fetches and ignored its rules. The same runs also requested each site's robots.txt file, but only to find the address of its sitemap.

A daily crawler that identifies itself and honours robots.txt is planned. It does not exist yet, and nothing on these pages was fetched by it.

What software checked

Software checked that each quoted text can be found again in the stored copy of the page it came from, using the same extraction code that produced it, and that each date is the capture time recorded with that copy. It does not check how the text should be read, whether visitors saw different versions (A/B tests, country, logged-in state), or whether a line was one item of a rotating carousel.

A language model then re-read each row against extracts of the stored page (its title, description, list of headlines and the lines near the quoted text) and could only remove a row, never add or reword one. Neither step looked at the live rendered page. No human reviewed any statement.

Limits

Two captures that differ do not show that the company changed its site on a particular day: captures can come from different visitors, countries, devices or experiments. What a page shows can differ by visitor, country and time. Text is shown as extracted from the page, and extraction can miss or merge text. These pages are static and are updated only when they are republished; each page shows the dates it covers.

Retention

A copy of each page cited here is retained, and the company it names can ask for it by email.
